Alchemy is important to the history of chemistry because many of the theories that were developed by alchemists hold true to modern chemistry. It is also important to learn about alchemy because it shows how far we have come in terms of science today.
The most acknowledged definition of alchemy is the " Mixing of chemicals with the intent of making gold. " While is not completely accurate, Alchemy does include the mixing of chemicals in order to find the smallest unit of, for lack of a better word, matter. Many philosophers gave their opinions on this subject. Some were right on target, more specifically those who supported atomic theory. Others were far off, but their ideas held for many years by being accepted by the contemporary people.
